trying to reach providers NOT enrolled with Medicaid
Beginning July 1, 2026, claims submitted for services ordered, referred, or prescribed by a provider who is not enrolled in Medicaid will be denied. The New Mexico Health Care Authority is trying to reach in-state and out-of-state providers who are NOT enrolled with Medicaid, but who refer or order services, or prescribe medications.
The New Mexico Medicaid program is required by federal law to implement a policy requiring all ordering, referring, and prescribing providers to be individually enrolled with Medicaid. This requirement is effective for dates of service on or after July 1, 2026.
Beginning July 1, 2026, claims submitted for services ordered, referred, or prescribed by a provider who is not enrolled in Medicaid will be denied. This requirement applies to all individual clinicians who render services to Medicaid members, including those practicing within group practices, hospital systems, facilities, behavioral health agencies, Indian Health Services, and other organizational providers.
This policy aligns with federal program integrity requirements and ensures accurate provider records, screening compliance, and appropriate reimbursement. Enrollment enables Medicaid to verify credentials, maintain up-to-date provider information, and ensure that payments are made only for services delivered by qualified, enrolled practitioners.
How You Can Help
If you know that your claims are referred or ordered from an unenrolled provider, please help them by directing that provider to the HCA ORP web page which has directions on how to enroll as a Medicaid provider.

Air Quality Awareness
Play a vital role in protecting their patients from the health impacts of indoor air pollution. The Lung Association urges healthcare professionals to play a vital role in protecting their patients from the health impacts of indoor air pollution (IAP). A nationwide survey found that while healthcare professionals believe they should assess patients for indoor air pollution exposure, most are not satisfied with their knowledge of its health effects. Here are some tools that The American Lung Association has developed to help healthcare professionals identify, screen and treat patients for IAP exposure:
Resource Hub: toolkits with resources to address common indoor air pollutants.
Air Quality Action Plan: plan to help patients take action towards improving the air in their home.
Risks: The Health Impacts of Indoor Air Quality, a FREE one-hour online training designed to help healthcare professionals identify, screen and treat patients at-risk for health impacts of indoor air pollution. Continuing Education credits are available for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists.
