Represent New Mexico at the Family Medicine Advocacy Summit (FMAS)

Make your voice heard in Washington, DC. The Family Medicine Advocacy Summit (FMAS), hosted annually by the American Academy of Family Physicians, is a premier opportunity to engage directly with federal lawmakers and advocate for policies that strengthen family medicine and improve patient outcomes.

We encourage everyone to attend this event to amplify our voice. Share your unique perspective with policymakers—wherever you are in your family medicine journey. At the Family Medicine Advocacy Summit, your voice matters. This event, created for family physicians, is your chance to influence change on the issues you’ve experienced firsthand. Join colleagues from across the country to elevate the priorities of our state and our specialty. This is more than a conference—it’s a chance to shape the future of healthcare.

What to Expect at FMAS

  • Policy Briefings & Advocacy Training: Gain a deep understanding of current legislative issues affecting family medicine, including payment reform, workforce development, and public health initiatives. Expert-led sessions will prepare you to speak confidently and effectively with policymakers.

  • Meetings on Capitol Hill: Participate in scheduled visits with members of Congress and their staff. These meetings are your chance to share stories from the front lines of care and advocate for solutions that matter to New Mexico communities.

  • Networking & Collaboration: Connect with family medicine advocates who share your commitment to healthcare. FMAS fosters a strong sense of community and shared purpose among attendees from across the country.

  • Visibility & Impact: Your participation helps amplify the voice of New Mexico family medicine. Legislators value hearing directly from constituents.

Why It Matters

Federal policy decisions have a direct impact on how family physicians practice and how patients access care. By attending FMAS, you become part of a national movement to ensure that family medicine remains strong, sustainable, and centered on patient needs. FMAS offers a platform to turn your convictions into action.

Delegate Selection & Expectations

To ensure broad representation across the state, one representative will be selected from each of New Mexico’s three congressional districts. Final selections will be made by the NMAFP Board of Directors based on submitted applications and demonstrated interest in advocacy.

Selected representatives are eligible for up to $2,500 in reimbursement to help cover travel, lodging, and registration expenses associated with attending FMAS.

In return, each delegate is required to attend the conference and related events, will need to attend the board meeting following FMAS to provide a report, and will be asked to write an article for the next edition of NMAFP’s The Roadrunner newsletter, sharing highlights from their FMAS experience and insights gained during their time in Washington. This reflection helps inform and inspire fellow members—and strengthens our collective voice in future advocacy efforts.
